Primary Care
Our Primary Care teams provide comprehensive care focused on prevention, wellness, treatment of illness and injuries, and management of chronic health conditions.
Our teams consist of Medical Program Assistants, Medical Assistants, Registered Nurses, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Physicians.
We address acute illnesses (like strep throat), injuries (such as sprains), and treatment for chronic conditions (such as asthma).
For concerns that require more focused or specialized care, Primary Care Providers may refer you to other providers at UHS or in the Madison community.
You are a partner in your care. We believe providing you with health information and evidence-based care empowers you to make the best health care decisions for yourself.
We recognize that people are unique, with varied beliefs, cultural backgrounds, gender identities, and sexual orientations. We provide competent care while addressing individual needs.
We encourage you to see the same clinician each time you come to UHS to help ensure high-quality care.

Note: Not all appointments are bookable online. If you don’t see an appointment, call UHS to schedule.
Preparing for your visit
Enter your health history and upload any important health documents to your MyUHS account. This can be especially helpful if you are seeing a provider for a chronic or ongoing concern that you have been treated for outside of UHS. UHS providers do not automatically have access to your health records through other systems, like MyChart.
If you need to have a previous medical provider share medical records with UHS directly, you may be asked to complete a Release of Information Form.
You will receive a notification one hour before your appointment to begin the check-in process. This includes answering some questions in MyUHS. After answering the questions, you will be given a barcode to use for checking in.
Arrive at UHS 15 minutes before your scheduled visit to allow adequate time for the check-in process. Once you arrive at UHS, you will check in using a barcode in the MyUHS app on your phone.
When it is time for your appointment, a medical assistant will call your name in the waiting room and escort you back to the clinic room for your visit. You will be asked to confirm your identity by providing your name and date of birth. The medical assistant will take your vital signs, such as a blood pressure reading, temperature, height, and weight. They will also review any allergies.
A medical provider will ask you questions about your concern. Sometimes the questions will be similar to questions that you were asked on the phone. The provider may or may not have to perform a physical exam (such as looking in your ears, listening to your heart, or evaluating your painful knee). The provider will explain what they think is happening and will recommend next steps, which may include blood tests, X-rays, medications, referral to a specialist, or advice on how to care for yourself at home.
If needed, a follow-up visit will be scheduled.
Frequently asked questions
UHS functions like most health care clinics do. We intentionally hold some appointments back from being bookable online in order to schedule patients who need care sooner. Calling UHS allows us to determine the urgency of your concern and get you an appointment sooner if needed. If you do not see appointments available in MyUHS, call 608-265-5600 to speak with a nurse.
When calling, you will be asked for your name, student ID number, and/or date of birth. The person who answers the phone will ask a few questions about your concern. Based on those answers, you will either be scheduled to see a provider or will be called back by a nurse to discuss the concern in more detail to ensure that you receive the right level of care.
Most services at UHS are available at no additional cost because they’re covered by your tuition and fees. UHS does not bill insurance for services. There may be costs for a few services, such as:
- Completing forms for third parties, like study abroad programs or employment-related physical exams
- Immunizations and titer testing
- Medical equipment, like crutches or a wrist splint
Medication prescriptions are sent to a pharmacy of your choice. The pharmacy can bill your insurance, which may reduce the cost of the prescription.
UHS cannot share information about care received at UHS with your parents/caregivers without your written consent. If you fill a prescription and your insurance is used, your parents could receive information about the names of prescriptions filled. If you have privacy concerns, discuss them with your care provider.
Not sure whether to seek care?
