Symptom Checker Tool


UHS’s online symptom checker tool is a new resource to help connect students to the right care.

The online symptom checker tool is available 24/7 and provides clinically supported recommendations for care based on your symptoms and health concerns—whether that means self-care at home, seeking care at UHS, or receiving more urgent help.  

Access the Symptom Checker Tool

  1. Log in to MyUHS with your NetID and password.
  2. Click on Schedule an Appointment > Student Health Services > Check My Symptoms. 

About the Symptom Checker Tool

Use the symptom checker tool whenever you are not sure whether to seek care for a health concern.

This could be a new or emerging issue, like an illness or injury, or an ongoing concern. Find out how serious your symptoms are, if a health care visit is needed, and what steps you can take to relieve your symptoms at home.  

While the information and recommendations shared in the symptom checker tool are based on expert recommendations from clinical providers, the information you share through the tool is not reviewed by a provider and will not be provided to your UHS provider if you are a current patient. You may want to save or print the information you receive to reference as you speak with your provider.

After answering a few questions about your symptoms or health concern, you will receive a recommendation based on expert medical advice:

  • Self-care with recommendations for managing your symptoms at home 
  • Getting help now by visiting emergency room 
  • Getting help soon by visiting UHS or an urgent care center

Students can access the symptom checker tool online through MyUHS. After logging in to MyUHS, click on Schedule an Appointment > Student Health Services > Check My Symptoms. Students can access the tool 24/7 online.  

The symptom checker tool can be used whenever you are not sure whether to seek care or where you should go for care. You can use the tool for questions about a new or emerging concern, like an illness or injury, or an ongoing concern. Using the tool, you can find out how serious your symptoms are, if a health care visit is needed, and what steps you can take to relieve your symptoms at home.  

The symptom checker tool is only open to current UW–Madison students. You must be at least 17 years old to use the tool. The symptom checker tool is not available to parents or family members of students.  

Yes, the information shared in the symptom checker tool is completely private and will not be stored or shared. You will be asked to provide your age and gender in order to receive relevant care recommendations, but this information is not linked to your identity.  

The symptom checker tool will provide you with recommendations on where to seek care based on your symptoms. The tool may recommend visiting a local emergency room or urgent care center, seeking care at UHS, or caring for yourself at home. This recommendation is based on the information you shared and severity of your symptoms.
