Travel Health

Travel Health provides health evaluations and advice to students planning to travel abroad or returning from international travel. Schedule as soon as possible, at least one-to-two months prior to your departure date. Some vaccinations need to be administered more than one month before travel. It is important to evaluate your travel risk if you:

  • study abroad,
  • participate in an overseas mission or volunteer program,
  • complete certificates for global health, environmental health, or engineering,
  • plan international travel,
  • visit friends or relatives in another country, and/or
  • have other travel-related concerns.

Travel to-do list

1. Check vaccinations

Make sure your MyUHS vaccination record is up to date. If not, check with your childhood and/or current healthcare provider to obtain records. Update your UHS record in MyUHS.

2. Review your current vaccinations

Country-specific recommendations are available from Trip Prep. You can also obtain country-specific destination information from the Centers for Disease Control.

3. Set up a phone appointment for a travel consultation

Set up a time to speak with a UHS provider to understand any travel-related health needs, including vaccination and/or a physical exam. You can also set up a post-travel appointment.

Travel visits available

The following services are available through Travel Health. Some appointment types require a fee.

This appointment is recommended if you need country-specific recommendations, vaccinations, and prescription medications.

This appointment includes completion of forms and/or a physical examination required for some international university programs or Visa applications, as well as country-specific recommendations, vaccinations, and prescription medications for travel. There is an additional cost associated with this appointment.

Post-travel appointments are recommended for students with the following concerns:

  • Illness or fever within three months after returning,
  • Possible exposure to a potentially serious infectious disease while traveling, or
  • More than three months spent living or travelling in a developing country

Travel vaccination cost

Travel vaccinations are available from UHS for an extra fee. See more about Costs and Billing. Flu vaccines are free and offered on campus.

Some vaccinations are given in a series of more than one injection. With documentation, students may receive one or more injections at UHS and one or more of the series elsewhere.

Check with your insurance provider to determine if travel vaccinations are covered and the most appropriate place to obtain these.

Occasionally there are national shortages on certain vaccines. Call UHS to verify availability prior to scheduling an appointment to receive an immunization.
