Biography

Jermaine (Jay) Bean, Ph.D., CMPC, joined UHS in 2022 and serves as an Embedded Provider within the Wisconsin Athletics’ Mental Health and Sport Psychology department, where he also serves as the Coordinator of Performance Psychology. He received his Masters degree in Sport Psychology. During his doctoral program, he worked with athletes in various capacities at UCLA and DePaul University before starting at UW Athletics.

As an embedded Mental Health and Sport Psychology provider for Football, Men’s Golf, Track and Field, and Men’s Rowing, Dr. Bean offers consultations on sports performance, individual counseling, and coach education, with a particular emphasis on supporting student-athletes of color.

In his role as the Coordinator of Performance Psychology for UW Athletics, Dr. Bean is dedicated to enhancing the performance of Badger student-athletes and teams through the design, implementation, and coordination of diverse performance psychology programs. In this role, Dr. Bean is also responsible for developing and disseminating performance psychology resources, including app-based platforms.

Outside of UW-Madison, Dr. Bean works as a Sport Psychology consultant for USA Track and Field. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching sports, playing basketball, and trying to golf!
