U Got This!
Fall 2026 Deadline: August 27, 2026

- Identify social norms, attitudes, and behaviors that promote violence and victim blame
- Use of bystander intervention strategies to disrupt attitudes and behaviors that contribute to sexual assault and dating violence
- Recall the confidential advocacy and support services available to student survivors and victims, both on- and off-campus

GetWIse
Fall 2026 deadline: October 15, 2026
The GetWIse program will be available in Canvas following the U Got This! completion date. The GetWIse programs, designed by UHS Violence Prevention professional staff and student Peer Educators, help students explore violence prevention and survivor support topics more thoroughly on their own. Each program should take around 90–120 minutes.
There are four program topics to choose from:
ActWIse empowers students with the skills to recognize violence in your communities; intervene in safe, survivor-centered ways; and support each other in creating a culture of care and accountability.
This program helps students explore their own relationship needs and boundaries; respectful communication and conflict skills; characteristics of relationship violence; and how to support survivors and hold each other accountable to relationship norms of respect, consent, and care.
Most college-aged survivors of sexual and relationship violence first turn to their friends and family for help. This program helps build empathy and understanding of the impacts of violence and trauma and teaches concrete skills and strategies college students can use to support a friend who has been harmed by violence.
This program explores healthy sexuality and sexual violence in college. Participants will reflect on their own sexual wants and boundaries and the impact of stigma and social norms on individual choices about sex. Finally, students will learn about sexual violence, coercion, and concrete strategies for practicing consent.
Completing one GetWIse program is required for all first-year and new transfer students and encouraged for all other undergraduates to build their knowledge around violence prevention and survivor support topics. Access GetWIse in Canvas starting August 28, 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions – U Got This
The U Got This! program is an online relationship and sexual violence prevention education tool designed for first-year and incoming transfer undergraduate students. U Got This! was developed by Catharsis Productions, a company that seeks to change the world by producing innovative, accessible, and research-supported programming that challenges oppressive attitudes and shifts behavior.
All incoming undergraduate and transfer students are required to complete the U Got This! program and cannot register for future courses at UW–Madison until doing so.
UW-Madison takes sexual and relationship violence very seriously and expects all students to do the same. It is very likely all students on campus either know a survivor of sexual or relationship violence, or will meet someone with that experience during their time on campus.
From research, we know that 1 in 15 men, over 1 in 4 women, and over 1 in 3 transgender and non-binary students experience sexual assault in during their time as an undergraduate. Among all undergraduates, first-year students and sophomores experience higher rates of sexual victimization than juniors and seniors. Additionally, nearly 10% of UW-Madison students reported experiencing physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse by a dating partner in the past 12 months, and 46% of all undergraduates reported experiencing sexually harassing behaviors during their time at UW-Madison.
Sexual assault and dating violence are violations of the University of Wisconsin System student code of conduct and against the law. Knowing what warning signs of violence to look for, how to practice consent in all parts of life, what resources are available to help survivors, how to intervene as a bystander, and how to help a friend who may have experienced violence are crucial for making UW-Madison a safe place for all students.
After the course has been made public on August 3, 2026, log on to your Canvas account with your NetID. Select “U Got This! | Fall 2026.”

Below are a few common issues to assist with troubleshooting:
- I completed a module, but I can’t progress to the next section: Please ensure you have viewed the entire module and completed the Completion Quiz at the end of the module. After confirming your completion in the quiz, click the “next” button and return to Canvas (do NOT exit the module window). Once in Canvas, click the “next” button on the lower right-hand side of the Canvas page to proceed to the next section of the program. If the next Module still has not unlocked, please do not re-take the module. Instead, please e-mail a detailed description of the issue you’re experiencing to violenceprevention@uhs.wisc.edu. A screenshot of your completion quiz results with the Module title clearly visible can be helpful for verifying completion, but is not required.
- I completed the quiz in Module 4 but am not able to proceed to the Post-Survey: Please first make sure that you’ve completed all lessons in Module 4, including the two completion quizzes.
- I clicked a response in one of the modules, but nothing is happening: This can sometimes happen if a user clicks a response prompt too quickly while rushing through the program. To resolve it, click your chosen response again and the program should continue (you may have to click a different response to proceed). It is strongly advised to take your time while completing the program to avoid this.
- The program froze and is displaying an audio icon. I can’t move forward: Click the audio icon and you should be able to exit this screen.
UW-Madison tracks who completes U Got This! through the Canvas gradebook. A student has completed the U Got This! program when the pre-program survey, all four modules, and the post-program survey have 100% completion scores. Students who do not complete the program will have a hold on their record and will not be able to register for future semesters at UW-Madison until the program is complete.
If you are unsure whether you have completed the program, check your grades in Canvas to see if you have completion scores for all modules, surveys, and quizzes. If you’ve completed the Post-Program Survey, you’ve completed the entire program and will not receive an enrollment hold. If you are still unsure, contact violenceprevention@uhs.wisc.edu.
No, individual responses to the program surveys will not appear on transcripts or on student records.
Responses may be viewed by UHS Violence Prevention staff, but will not be shared nor published except in composite (i.e., 68 percent of U Got This! participants could identify at least one office on campus dedicated to helping victims of sexual assault).

In 2023, UHS made the decision to offer GetWIse to all undergraduate students as an annual refresher course to reinforce violence prevention knowledge, awareness, and skills. This decision was based on UW-Madison’s campus data, review of violence prevention programs by peer universities, CDC recommendations, and student feedback. Offering GetWIse as an annual refresher aims to prepare students to better support one another and remind students of important resources available on campus.
Violence prevention is not just a concern for first-year students, and knowledge of UW-Madison’s existing resources, policies, and processes related to violence prevention and survivor support is low among undergraduate students. Studies show that repeated education opportunities increase the effectiveness of violence prevention education, and many other universities already encourage or require annual violence prevention training.
Although you have the option to choose the same GetWIse course you have completed in past years, you are encouraged to expand your knowledge around violence prevention and survivor support topics. All four courses provide important refresher information on campus policy, resources, rights, accommodations, and reporting options related to sexual and relationship violence, but they also introduce new information related to the course theme. Four GetWIse courses are available, so you have the option to complete a different course during each year of your undergraduate degree.
Yes! Four GetWIse courses are available so you have the option to complete a different course during each year of your undergraduate degree. You are encouraged to complete a GetWIse module each year, though you are welcome to complete multiple module per year if you wish.
The continue buttons are formatted so that you need to explore all of the content in a lesson before it will allow you to move on to the next lesson. If the continue button isn’t activated for you, go back through the lesson and see if there is any content you haven’t yet visited – such as additional tabs, pages, or other “clickable” information.
If you feel that you have reviewed all of the necessary content and still can’t move forward, you can send an email to violenceprevention@uhs.wisc.edu with a description of where you are getting stuck. Please send a screenshot if possible.
It is possible that you did not certify your completion for the program you completed in Canvas.
