John joined UHS’s Mental Health Team in 2024 as a the Embedded Mental Health Provider for the Law School. John has been working to support the mental health of law students on campus since the Fall of 2019. He particularly enjoys this bright and passionate group of students as they work toward change in not only their personal lives but the wider world.
John previously served as a practicum student counselor at University Health Services (UHS) and a crisis intervention specialist at Briarpatch during his Master’s of Social Work program here at UW. Prior to returning to campus to work for the Law School, John provided diagnostic services, life skills coaching, and therapy for over five years in outpatient mental health centers in two counties near Minneapolis.
John has been trained in evidence-based strategies to foster changes in thought and behavior, including mindfulness and trauma informed techniques. He has also been certified as a grief support specialist and motivational interviewer. John approaches his work with curiosity, warmth, humility, and a bit of humor.
