Bjorn Hanson joined UHS in 2014 from the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee where he worked with veterans of all ages, and he now splits his time between completing assessment at UHS and as an embedded provider with UW Athletics.
In his role as an assessment specialist, Hanson supports students and their UHS providers by evaluating their needs and answering questions that can guide treatment or provide insight. Assessments are usually completed in one to three one-hour sessions, and can include self-report surveys, personality testing, and clinical interviews.
“We want to understand what the person experiences and determine the best way to help, as well as support a person in better understanding themselves,” says Hanson.
In his role as an embedded provider, Hanson provides individual counseling and sports performance consultation to UW’s student-athletes. He consults with Men’s Basketball, Men’s Hockey, and Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams, which includes working with student-athletes, coaches, and support staff.
Hanson is a generalist provider who approaches therapy from a relational perspective and draws on evidence-based practices, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
“I encourage students and student-athletes to come in and have a conversation with us to find out what we’re about.”
