Using Insurance to Help Pay for Medication

Bring in your insurance card with the prescription, your student ID, and payment. You should always carry your insurance card. Depending on what insurance coverage or health plan you have, you may have different cards for medical, dental, vision, and/or prescriptions. If you’re not sure which is which, bring them all and the pharmacy staff can help you.

If you are covered under one or both of your parents, please bring those cards or a photocopy of the front and back of the cards. If you cannot photocopy the cards, please obtain this information from your parent(s) for each plan under which you’re covered:

  • name of the insurance/health plan
  • phone number for the insurance company
  • member/subscriber number
  • group number
  • your two-digit person code

Each insurance company/health plan is different and has a different approved drug list. Be aware that some insurance companies will not cover a certain drug and will want to offer you the generic brand instead.

Sometimes the clinician who wrote the prescription may have to fill out paperwork in order for the insurance company to cover the medication. Consider checking with your insurance company or talking to your clinician about this before or while you receive the prescription.
