What to Expect at a Sexual Health Clinic Appointment

Check in with the receptionist at the Sexual Health Clinic, which is located on the 6th floor.

If you are scheduled for a routine screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), you will have a standard 20-minute office visit. A medical assistant will call you from the waiting room and show you into an examination room. She will take your blood pressure and ask a few basic questions about your visit. Then a clinician will see you and:

  • ask about your sexual history
  • ask about current symptoms
  • perform a brief physical exam to check for rashes, sores, etc., if needed
  • for men, collect a urine specimen to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea
  • for women, swab your cervix during a vaginal exam to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea. For many women, a urine specimen may be collected instead.
  • offer blood testing for HIV and/or syphilis when indicated
  • provide you with STI risk-reduction counseling
  • provide you with any needed treatment

Your STI test results will be available about one week after your appointment.

In all cases, your clinician will be available to address any questions or concerns you may have. You will be contacted by telephone if test results indicate an infection is present. Routine normal results will be sent to you via our secure web portal, MyUHS.
