Pregnancy Tests

The University Health Services (UHS) Women's Clinic offers free pregnancy testing for UW-Madison students. Pregnancy testing may be requested at the Women's Clinic reception desk. No appointment is required.

The test is accurate when taken 10 days or more after sexual intercourse occurred or any time after a missed menstrual period. A urine sample will be collected and the results will be available by phone 30 minutes later. Plan to arrive before 4 pm to assure that the results will be available the same day.

If the test is positive:

Schedule an appointment with a Women's Clinic clinician to discuss available options. Students are welcome to bring a partner, friend, or parent along to the appointment. It may also be helpful to schedule an appointment with a UHS counselor for help with decision-making related to the pregnancy.

If the test is negative:

The Women's Clinic staff can provide comprehensive information regarding birth control and assist you in choosing a method Gynecology exams and Pap testing are also available. Testing for sexually transmitted infections is recommended for all sexually active men and women.

Prenatal care

There is a variety of excellent clinics and health care providers, including nurse midwives, available in Madison for health care during pregnancy. You may want to talk with a UHS clinician about provider options, to assist you in selecting the one that meets your needs.

If prenatal care is not covered by health insurance, it is possible to qualify for care under the Wisconsin Badgercare Plus Program for Pregnant Women, which covers medical care for pregnant women. If you already have a prenatal care clinic, contact your clinic to see if they can use express enrollment to start temporary insurance for up to 2 months while you apply for the regular Badgercare Plus through your county or tribal agency. Contact the local health department for details or use the Wisconsin Badgercare Plus for Pregnant Women
