Sex Dams
Sex dams (sometimes called “dental dams”) are thin sheets of latex that can be placed over the vulva (a woman’s genitals) or anus during oral sex. Like condoms, sex dams provide a barrier that helps reduce the risk of catching or spreading many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia or gonorrhea.
Getting sex dams
Check a local pharmacy or any other stores that carry items such as condoms or lube. Cut a male condom in half lengthwise, from the tip of the head to the roll at the base, so that it becomes a rectangular piece of material. Those with latex allergies should only use polyurethane condoms to do this. Use plastic food wrap, but only the kind that cannot be used in the microwave. This option is also appropriate for those with latex allergies.
Instructions for use
- Open the packet and take out the sex dam.
- Check the dam carefully for any rips, holes, or tears
- Apply lube to the side that will touch the skin, if desired.
- Place the sex dam wherever the mouth will contact. To perform oral sex on a woman, for example, place the dam on her vulva, over the lips, clitoris, and vagina.
- Perform oral sex however desired, using the mouth and tongue over the dam.
Remember: Never reuse a sex dam, not even on the same person, as this can spread infections and bacteria.
Tips for using sex dams
- Using silicone- or water-based lube (never oil-based) on the side of the dam that touches the skin can enhance sensation and help the dam move more easily.
- If the taste of sex dams is an issue, try using flavored sex dams, condoms, or lube.
- Like condoms, sex dams should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight—this means no wallets!
- To perform oral sex on a penis, condoms are a more practical option.
