How to use a Condom

Free Condoms!

Visit the 5th floor information desk at UHS, 333 East Campus Mall, during normal business hours.

  1. Start with a new condom that has been stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight—no wallets or glove compartments.
  2. Put the condom on before any genital contact occurs.
  3. Pinch the tip of the condom between your thumb and forefinger, making sure that no air remains. By doing this, you leave room at the tip of the condom to collect semen (cum) and reduce the likelihood of breakage.

  4. If uncircumcised, pull the foreskin back before putting on the condom.
  5. Be sure the rolled rim is on the outside and unroll the condom to the base of the erect penis.
  6. Smooth out any air bubbles.
  7. Use a water-based lubricant on the outside of the condom to keep it from breaking during use. Oil-based lubricants, like massage oil, baby oil, Vaseline, or vaginal creams for yeast infections, weaken latex condoms and make them more likely to tear.
  8. Remove the condom before the penis softens. Hold the condom at the base of the penis and pull out. This prevents the condom from slipping or leaking.
  9. Use a new condom for every act of intercourse, especially if changing between anal sex and other types of penetration.
